The central and southern regions of Egypt were long plagued by various social, educational, and geographical challenges.
Before 1959-1960, since there was no university in the city of Minia, its residents had to travel to other cities in Egypt for education. During that time, they had to go to Alexandria and especially Cairo for higher education, which were more than 262-265 kilometers away from Minia.
Consequently, the population in those cities continued to rise, leading to increased population pressure and housing shortages. At that time, the transportation system was not as advanced as it is today.
Consequentlty, students-especially female students-had very limited opportunities to pursue an education far from their families. During that period, the quality of education provided in the primary and secondary schools of rural Egypt was insufficient.
Furthermore, there was a lack of modern medical facilities, research opportunities, and modernization, with income levels suffering due to traditional farming methods.
To solve these complex problems, the university was established in1966 as a branch campus of Assiut University.
During this period, the “Faculty of Education” and the “Faculty of Agriculture” were established to foster education and develop skilled agricultural practitioners for economic growth, subsequently, Science and Humanities depertments were introduced at the primary levels.
After being affiliated with Assiut University for about 10 years, it gained the status of an independent public university in 1976 via Republican Decree No. 93, following which the “Faculty of Atrs” and the “Faculty of Science” were fully launched.
Subsequently, the “Faculty of Engineering” and the “Faculty of Fine Arts” were established here in 1983. In 1986, the “Faculty of Medicine” and a “Teaching Hospital” were founded to provide medical services.
From 1990 onwards, to further strengthen the university’s medical sector, the “Faculty of Dentistry” was established in 1994, followed by the “Faculty of Pharmacy” in 1995.
Since the city of Minia was a beautiful tourist destination, the “Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management” was established in 1996 to develop the tourism sector.
Between 2001 and 2003, the “Faculty of Computers and Information Science” was founded to meet the demands of technology, and in 2006, the “Faculty of Nursing” was established to develop advanced nursing professionals for the hospitals.
Subsequently, between 2013 and 2015, state-of-the-art laboratories and a “Nanotechnology Center” were established to meet the demands of digital technology and research.
Between 2018 and 2020, the student dormitories were modernized and renovated for the convenience of the students enrolled at Minia University, and an “E-larning Center” ewas established.
After 2020, several new smart classrooms were developed at the university. Additionally, a large-scale liver surgery center—the largest for specialized surgery in Upper Egypt—was established, with the project being carried out from 2021 to 2025.
