The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is one of the prominent private public research universities in the United States, which is famous for its beautiful environment.

Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the university has been associated with Fields Medalists, recipients of the national Medal of Technology and Innovation, Foreign heads of state, several chief scientists of the U.S. Air Force, Nobel laureates, Marshall Scholars, and numerous Turing Award winners.

Its founder, William Barton Rogers, was a geologist and educator who moved from the University of Virginia to Boston. Currently, MIT provides education in a wide array of disciplines, including commerce, arts, agriculture, economics, and research at the Haystack Observatory.

It follows a polytechnic model, offering programs in electrical, chemical, marine, and sanitary engineering, along with technical research, laboratory sciences, mathematics, humanities, social sciences, management, political ecience, linguistics, high-altitude photography, robotics, STEM, modern computing, networking technology, computer science, biology, physics, and drone technology. This American university is situatdin the city of Cambridge.

Berore the establishment of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), there was a vast amount of open land in Boston’s Back Bay.

In 1859, a proposal was submitted to the Massachusetts General Court to establish a conservatory of art and science, along with a museum, on that open land.

However, the proposal was ultimately unsuccessful. This university, now located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was founded as a school in Boston in 1861 by William Barton Rogers to instill essential knowledge in students.

Rogers believed that by advancing science and technology and introducing a new paradigm of higher education, students would be empowered to tackle all modern challenges.

Barton Rogers was not only the founder of MIT but also served as the university’s first president. He dedicated many years of his life to building an institution focused on providing scientific and technical training for students.

Following its founding in 1861, fundraising effotrs began but faced significant obstacles and delays due to the American Civil War. At that time, traditional educational institutions werw largely unprepared for the emerging challenges of the era.

MIT began providing education in fundamental sciences such as Physics, Biology, Mathematics, and Architecture, alongside specialized fields like Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering, Nanotechnology, and Aerospace Science.

In 1863, under the Morrill Land-Grant Act, the institution was designated alongside what is now the University of Massachusetts Amherst. In 1865, the first classes of this private research university commenced in a rented space within the Mercantile Building in downtown Boston with a group of 14 students.

That same year, laboratory-based Chemistry instruction was introduced for the first time. The primary campus MIT , known as the Cambridge Campus, is situated along the banks of the Charles River, spanning over a mile and covering approximately 167.91 acres.

During an era when American education was dominated by classical studies like latin and Greek, MIT took a contrary approach, prioritizing Physics, Applied Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, and Chemistry.

Today, the institution is also renowned for its School of Architecture and Planning. What began as a small establishment in 1861 has transformed into a massive institution, currently home to over 11,500 undergraduate and graduate students and 1,010 faculty members.

In 1866, the sale of land generated significant revenue, which was utilized to construct new facilities, including the famous Rogers Building.

Subsequently, the university adopted the model of European polytechnic universities, emphasizing laboratory-based practical education for its students. The construction of the building in Back Bay was completed for the first time in 1866, before 1867.

In 1870, Ellen Swallow Richards was admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and subsequently, as an expert in Chemistry, Ellen Swallow was given female membership for the first time as an MIT faculty member, which had never happened before.

In 1871, the Architecture department was established at the university, which was one of the oldest architecture programs in the United States.

In 1873, it was surrounded by economic recession, decline, etc., as a result of which the financial condition of MIT completely broke down and the number of student admissions also decreased significantly.

In 1878, after dismissing 3 to 4 professors from their posts and reducing the salaries of the faculty members, the members of the Board of Trustees considered closing the institute completely.

John Daniel Runkle had been a member of MIT since 1860, and he played an important role in the university’s institution. When the first class was started in a rented space in Boston in 1865, Runkle was the first mathematics professor there.

After 1867, when the first president Barton Rogers fell ill, Daniel Runkle took charge of MIT during this period, and from 1870, Runkle fully assumed the responsibilities as President.

Despite various problems at MIT since 1870, such as economic recession, decline, decreasing student numbers, and issues regarding faculty salaries, he served as President for about 9 years before resigning from the post of MIT President (in 1879).

Afterward, while traveling in Europe, he observed the educational systems and how students were taught there, and subsequently rejoined MIT as a professor of mathematics.

From 1879 to 1880, during this interim period, the 75-year-old founder of MIT, William Barton Rogers, had to handle the post of President once again.

In 1880, as the post of President was vacant, Rogers wrote a letter to Francis Amasa Walker requesting him to accept the presidency of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), because at that time, the professors, scientists, and leaders in the university lacked administrative experience for this position.

After April 1881, Amasa Walker accepted the presidency. On May 25, Amasa Walker was elected as President by the MIT Corporation. As President of MIT, Amasa Walker started a new type of general education program (Course IX), and special importance was given here to educating students in Law, English, Economics, History, as well as modern languages.

Walker always took major decisions after taking the opinions of the faculty members as well as all the teachers. As President of MIT, between 1880 and 1882, within 3 to 4 years of the invention of Edison’s bulb, Amasa Walker launched an independent Electrical Engineering department for the first time in the world.

During this time, students here were provided with hands-on education. By 1882, the established a Chemical Engineering course, which was the first in the world, and on May 30, 1882, William Barton Rogers passed away.
